Billing and plans
This guide explains how Deputise's plans work, what each tier gives you, and how to subscribe, upgrade, downgrade, cancel, and top up your credits. It's the canonical reference for billing — for everything else about your account, see Managing your account.
Plan overview
Deputise has four tiers for builders. The tier you choose decides how many assistants you can run, how many chat credits you get each month, whether you can use Premium AI models, and what level of support you get.

A no-cost starting point so you can try things out and share your first assistants.
- Up to 2 assistants
- 20 chat credits per month
- Standard AI model only
- No support
- No image attachments or web search
Basic
A light tier for creators with a small audience.
- Up to 20 assistants

Pricing
Prices are charged in your local currency based on your country:
| Tier | GBP | USD | EUR |

You can see the public comparison at any time on the pricing page.
Subscribing for the first time
If you don't yet have a subscription, you'll be guided to /subscribe when you try to do something that needs one (like creating an assistant).
- Go to /pricing to compare tiers, or /subscribe if you've already chosen
- Pick the tier you want
- Read and accept the terms and conditions
- Click Subscribe
What happens next depends on the tier:
- Free — your subscription is activated immediately and your monthly credits are added to your balance
- Basic, Standard, or Pro — you'll be taken to a Stripe checkout page to enter payment details. Once payment is confirmed, your subscription is active and your monthly credits are credited
After a successful paid subscription, Stripe redirects you back to a confirmation page and you're ready to start building.
Upgrading
You can upgrade to a higher tier at any time from Account → Manage Account.
When you upgrade:
- The change takes effect immediately
- Your monthly credits are reset to the new tier's allowance (you don't lose any credits — they're topped up to the new amount)
- Your renewal date resets to today, so the next monthly reset is one month from when you upgraded
- Your card is charged a prorated amount through Stripe
If you're upgrading from Free to a paid tier for the first time, you'll go through Stripe checkout. After that, future tier changes happen instantly without re-entering payment details.
Downgrading
Downgrading is scheduled at the end of your current billing period rather than happening immediately. You keep all the benefits of your current tier until your renewal date.
To downgrade:
- Go to Account → Manage Account
- Choose the lower tier you want to move to
- Confirm the downgrade
What happens at the period end:
- Your tier changes to the new (lower) one
- Your monthly credit allowance changes to the new tier's amount
- If you have more enabled assistants than the new tier allows, the least recently used ones are automatically disabled to bring you within the limit. They aren't deleted — you can re-enable them later if you upgrade again
Cancelling a pending downgrade
If you change your mind before the downgrade takes effect, you can cancel it at any time from the same Manage Account page. Your current tier carries on as normal and your renewal date is unchanged.
Cancelling
You can cancel your subscription from Account → Manage Account. Cancellation works the same way as a downgrade — you keep access until the end of your current billing period, then your subscription ends.
While cancelled but still in the period:
- All your assistants stay live and usable
- Your credits stay available
- You can restore the subscription at any time before the period ends to undo the cancellation
After the period ends, your subscription expires. You can subscribe again later if you want to come back.
Note: cancellation, a pending downgrade, and an active subscription are mutually exclusive states — you can only have one of them at a time.
Credits — the basics
Credits are spent each time one of your assistants sends a response in a conversation. Two things determine how many credits a response costs:
- Standard AI model assistant — 1 credit per response
- Premium AI model assistant — 2 credits per response
Your monthly credit allowance is set by your tier and resets on your subscription anniversary date. Anything you don't spend in a given month doesn't carry over — the balance from your tier's allowance is reset to that month's allowance amount.
For more on how credits move through the system day-to-day, see the Credits section in Managing your account.
Topping up credits
If you run low before your monthly reset, you can buy extra credits at any time. Top-up credits stack on top of your monthly allowance — they aren't consumed instead of it, and they don't get wiped at the next reset.
To top up:
- Go to Account → Manage Account
- Choose a top-up amount
- Approve the payment
Credits are added to your balance as soon as the payment is confirmed.
For step-by-step instructions and warning banners to look out for, see Topping up credits in the troubleshooting guide.
What happens when credits run out
Deputise gives you a small grace period when you hit zero so conversations don't cut off mid-flow.
- Balance reaches 0 — you enter a short grace period. Existing conversations can keep going briefly, but new conversations can't be started
- Balance drops below -10 — all assistant usage is blocked until you either top up or your monthly reset arrives
You'll see a yellow warning banner once your balance drops to 10 or fewer credits, and a red warning when it hits zero. The simplest fix is a top-up — it takes effect immediately.
Premium models
The Premium model option is the latest generation of AI — generally smarter on complex tasks, but slower and twice the credit cost. You choose Standard or Premium per assistant from the assistant's settings.
Tier rules for Premium:
- Free tier can't use Premium. The option is greyed out in the assistant settings, and the API blocks Premium calls for Free-tier users
- Basic, Standard, and Pro can switch any assistant between Standard and Premium freely
- If you downgrade to Free, any assistants currently set to Premium are automatically disabled at the period end. They aren't deleted — re-enable them by upgrading and switching them back to Standard, or upgrade to a paid tier again
For more on choosing between Standard and Premium when building, see Creating assistants.
Where to manage all this
Everything billing-related lives in the Account area:
- Account → Manage Account (
/account/subscription) — see your current plan, change tier, cancel, restore, manage your billing details, and top up credits - Account → Spend (
/account/transactions) — full history of credits added, used, and adjusted, plus a chart of your spending over time - /pricing — the public comparison page for tiers (handy if you want to share it or compare side by side)
- /subscribe — first-time subscription flow if you don't yet have an active plan
If anything looks wrong — a charge you don't recognise, credits that didn't reset, a downgrade that went through unexpectedly — raise a support ticket from the Get Support button in the app. See Raising support tickets for how that works.
